Desalination and Renewable Energies

October 20/21 2009, S-009-2009, Sponsor: Solar Institut Jülich, Jülich, Germany, English

ISBN 978-3-86861-085-7

In view of the steadily growing need of energy even in the field of desalination processes it is most important to find new sources of energy. Because of this DME started some years ago its first seminar on renewable energies for desalination plants.

Starting up with an overview on basics in membrane/thermal desalination processes as well as on wind/solar (thermal/photovoltaic) energies this seminar will show large scale CPH Plants as well as small independently operating units. Water quality and environmental aspects are further subjects in this seminar. At the end of the presentations the speakers will answer questions and are prepared to discuss with the participants.

This seminar is primarily aimed at representatives of companies and universities as well as representatives of research and those who want to acquire this special know-how. The seminar will be held in English language.

Design of MED, MED-TVC, MVC Plants

September 29/30 2009, S-008-2009, English

ISBN 978-3-86861-084-0

Thermal desalination technology is a vast field and offers several possibilities to desalt water. To choose the right technology is the main task for engineers in order to minimize construction cost and to grant a solid plant, running for many years without any problems.

In this engineering course all important aspects of modern thermal desalination technology for saline waters will be teached starting with fundamentals and practical aspects including pre- and post treatment and giving advice on how to decide for the right components. Moreover environmental aspects will be regarded.

It is the intention of this seminar to provide deep solid knowledge for those who are involved in the interesting and challenging field of desalination.

Materials and Corrosion in Seawater Desalination

August 26/27 2009, S-007-2009, Sponsor: Fischer AquaDesalt GmbH, Achern-Fautenbach, Germany, English

ISBN 978-3-86861-083-3

The right choice and implementation of materials in desalination plants is most important especially in view of investment and operating cost. The use of bad material leads to problems such like corrosion.

In this seminar experts present the state-of-the-art material (even plastic), reveal cost and offer special solutions for special problems. They report about operational practice and are at your disposal for an open discussion.

More detailed information about speakers, subjects and seminar venue and   fees you will find in the attached flyer.

Introduction to Seawater Desalination

Seawater Desalination and the Environment

April 02/03 2009, S-002-2009, Berlin, Germany, English

ISBN 978-3-86861-081-9

Experts in the field of biology, chemistry, engineering and desalination will give an introduction into the desalination technologies and an overview of their environmental impacts. The training course is focused on the basic descriptions of technological and environmental processes all environmental compartments: Seawater and freshwater properties and related pre- and post-treatment technologies; energy use, renewable energies and related atmospheric emissions; construction related impacts; physical and biological characteristics of brine chemical discharges into the sea and their impact on the marine ecology. In addition, concepts regarding the design and assessment of desalination plant impacts, as well as mitigation measures are presented.

The ultimate purpose of this intensive course is to improve the skills of desalination and environment professionals and increase their awareness of the impacts of desalination plants on the environment. It is therefore designed to provide technical training and guidance to engineers, scientists, regulators, consultants and students.
