Zille lauds management of Bitou’s desalination plant- Plettenberg Bay – South Africa

WESTERN Cape premier Helen Zille has lauded the design and management of Bitou’s desalination plant. She was in the area last Thursday to speak at the S-Cape Landowner’s Initiative’s Environmental Seminar 2017, and to inspect projects related to the Garden Route Rebuild Initiative. Talking about drought mitigation measures in Bitou, she said: “Roodefontein Dam is currently 72% full, and augmentation schemes in this municipality include equipping two new boreholes in Kurland, four in KwaNokuthula, and four in Uplands. “Drilling for these boreholes has already commenced, and we’re also planning two additional boreholes in Harkerville. After inspecting Plett’s desalination plant, [

Conversion of Visible Light into Ionic Power Using Photoacid-Dye-Sensitized Bipolar Ion-Exchange Membranes

Here, we report a ∌60-fold increase in the photovoltage through use of a bipolar membrane structure consisting of a cation-exchange membrane affixed to an anion-exchange membrane. The junction between the layers was characterized in detail using electrochemistry, scanning electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Our results represent considerable progress toward a device that directly converts sunlight into ionic electricity, which has implications for direct solar desalination of salt water.

Parliament to vote in plenary session on three laws related to nuclear activities – Cairo – Egypt

The amendments are necessary before Egypt and Russia lay the foundation of the first nuclear power station at El-Dabaa

.

El-Wakeel explained that the aforementioned authority will be affiliated with the Ministry of Electricity and will be mainly tasked with proposing the construction of nuclear power stations for the purpose of electricity generation in Egypt as well as establishing desalination projects. “This authority will also take charge of conducting studies and research on nuclear stations in Egypt, and drafting the specifications of these stations,” said El-Wakeel, adding: “The amendments will also pave the way for the authority to [

Nuclear Desalination – IAEA

Desalination Thermodynamic Optimization Program (DE-TOP)

DE-TOP has been developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency as a tool for the thermodynamic analysis and optimization of nuclear cogeneration systems (currently with options for nuclear desalination and district heating applications). DE-TOP can be used to models the steam power cycle (Rankine cycle) of different water cooled reactors or fossil plants, and the coupling with any other non-electrical application. With an intuitive graphical user interface and flexible system configuration, the user can select different coupling arrangements between power plant and non-electric application (single steam extraction, multiple steam extraction, backpressure operation, etc.). Nuclear Power Plant permanent desalination plant? Koeberg – South Africa

Plans are underway to build a dozen desalination plants the majority will be temporary with the first ones expected to come online in February.

CAPE TOWN –

Australia’s multi-billion-dollar desalination plant in Perth cost its residents the equivalent of a cup of coffee per week. As western Australia experienced a serious drought, a desalination plant was commissioned and came online a decade ago. Back home, the City of Cape Town is hoping to pump an extra 300 million liters of desalinated water into the supply system. Plans are underway to build a dozen desalination plants, the majority [

Solvay and Suez Awarded Contract for Water Treatment Plant in China

Solvay and Suez have won the contract to treat brine from reverse osmosis desalination at Wanhua Chemical Industry Park in Yantai (Shandong Province). This contract is part of the Alliance between the companies which was formed to jointly develop and market Advanced Oxidation processes (AOP’s) within China to meet stringent environmental standards. Located in the coastal city of Yantai, the industry park of Wanhua Chemical, a global chemical company, is supplied with water by a reverse osmosis desalination plant. The contract provides a treatment line for the brine produced by the desalination process. With a capacity of 24 000 m3/day, [
