Membrane Distillation (MD)

Membrane Distillation (MD) is a thermal desalination process in which water vapour is transported through a hydrophobic porous membrane. Due to a partial pressure difference of vapour between a liquid surface and an air or gas stream, water is vaporised although the liquid phase is much below boiling temperature. A hydrophobic membrane can separate the two phases – liquid water and either vapour or vapour-gas mixture – in order to avoid the transfer of liquid or allow compact stream arrangements. Thus, MD is a non-isothermal membrane separation process with combined heat and mass transfer over the membrane. Parallel arrangement [

Capacitive Deionization (CDI)

In Capacitive Deionization (CDI), charged ionic species are removed from aqueous solutions. The ions are adsorbed onto the surface of a pair of electrically charged electrodes, usually composed of highly porous carbon materials, upon applying an electrical voltage difference. Upon charging the electrodes with a voltage difference of typically 1-1.4 V, the salt ions present in the feed migrate to the electrode of opposite charge, cations to the cathode and anions to the anode, and form electrical double layers (EDLs) along the pore surface. Thus, the water flowing through the CDI cell is partially desalinated. In a discharging step, [

Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA), is taking on the challenge with smart water-storage tanks and utility tracking software

SEWA aims to increase the availability of fresh water from 50 million gallons to 500 million gallons per day over the next five years and save 17 million gallons of water per day from being wasted.

Going With the Flow –

The utility’s water-storage system consists of numerous tanks fitted with sensors that analyze the levels and quality of fresh water. Signals are sent from the sensors via digital transmitters to an online instrumentation panel, which pumps chemicals into the tank to treat the water for impurities. The final product is pumped into clean water tanks, fed [

Multiple-Effect Humidification (MEH)

The Multiple-Effect Humidification (MEH) process for the extraction of water from salt-, brackish and well water represents a thermal method that is based on the well-known principle of evaporation (humidifier) and subsequent condensation (dehumidifier). The performance of this natural process was improved in the MEH process such that a major portion of the used evaporation energy remains within the process, permitting the low-temperature extraction of drinking water effectively and reasonably, without much waste heat, even in smaller units. The technical design of the process describes the natural water cycle, from evaporation (sea surface to atmosphere) to condensation (warm air [

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) is planning to set up desalination plant in Mangaluru – India

The annual report of the company for 2016-17 says that it has got permission from the Karnataka government to set up a desalination plant in Mangaluru. Feasibility studies, along with studies for environment impact assessment, are being done.

The project is expected to be commissioned in 2019-20, it said. It may be mentioned here that the water crisis in Mangaluru had resulted in partial shut down of the units of the refinery complex during April and May last year.

In fact, the annual report has listed ‘water availability’ as one of the risk factors in its annual [

We can repair desalination plants: Govt Namibia

Windhoek —

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry has denied reports suggesting it lacks the capacity to fix two solar-powered desalination plants set up to supply potable water to Amarika and Akutsima in the Omusati Region.

The two solar-powered desalination plants in question were donated by the German government in 2013 at a cost of about N$200 million. Deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Abraham Nehemia this week said government had enough competent people with the skills needed to repair the plants. His response came after the Namibian Sun reported last week that Nehemia [

Tobruk municipality declares humanitarian emergency – Libya

The Tobruk municipality in the eastern Libyan region declared a humanitarian crisis in a meeting with other municipal councils’ officials in Tobruk on Monday.

The municipality said that the city is on the verge of a human disaster as water shortages continue to increase as the city’s water desalination stations has become useless and old because it needs too much renovation.

Meanwhile, protesters took to the streets in Tobruk calling on the officials and the House of Representatives to find out quick solutions to the deteriorated living conditions in the city.

The protesters warned that if [

Flays AIADMK for inaction on crisis

DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Sunday urged the State government to deploy more water tankers at cheaper rate to meet the drinking water requirements of Chennai.

In a statement here, he said there was no water in the lakes that supplied drinking water to Chennai and people had been forced to fetch water from quarries.

“Even though the desalination plants created during the DMK regime in Minjur and Nemmeli help overcome the crisis in South Chennai to certain extent, the AIADMK government has not done anything in the last six [
