Large-scale dual-mode desalination plant in Singapore can treat both seawater and freshwater

…

The first of its kind in Singapore, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant will be a large-scale dual-mode desalination plant in Singapore that can treat both seawater and freshwater. Depending on wet or dry weather conditions, water is channelled either from the Marina Reservoir or the sea to the plant, where it will be treated.

The plant also achieves multiple uses of land, with underground treatment facilities and 20,000 square metres (sqm) of open green space on the rooftop for community recreation.

Slated for completion by 2020, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant will feature a sleek modern […]

Stone quarries in Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur and the two desalination plants in the city are the primary sources of drinking water now. Chennai – India

Drinking water supply to Chennai slashed by 50% as Tamil Nadu braces for worst drought in 140 years.

Drinking water supply to Chennai has been slashed by 50% as Tamil Nadu stares at its worst drought in 140 years. Water supply officials told NDTV that the capital city, which requires 830 million litres of water per day, has been receiving only half of it for the past few days.

To make matters worse, the four main reservoirs around Chennai – Poondi, Red Hills, Cholavaram and Chembarambakkam – are all running dry, which means piped water for drinking is being […]

ERONGO governor Cleophas Mutjavikua said the regional council through the Erongo water forum wants to acquire the Erongo desalination plant, or erect another plant – Namibia

Erongo, especially the coast, has the least rainfall in Namibia, with the traditional supply from the Omdel and Kuiseb schemes not properly replenished for several years.
Mutjavikua, however, did not elaborate on the terms involved in “acquiring” the N$3 billion dollar plant.
President Hage Geingob’s Harambee Prosperity Plan has plans to build a desalination plant with a capacity of producing 25 million cubic metre per year capacity by the end of 2019.
Having such a plant is a “non-debatable option”, agriculture minister John Mutorwa has said.
Areva Resources, which owns the Trekkopje mine, and Rio Tinto, which owns […]

Cape Town’s first desalination plant – South Africa

Mother City residents could be drinking seawater by as early as August of this year. Great news, seeing as the recent rains – as heavy as they were – barely made a dent in the dam levels of the resources supplying the city, pushing them up to just over 23%.

Officials are hopeful that, as of August, Capetonians won’t be completely reliant on existing dams and reservoirs, what with an additional 500 million litres of desalinated water being pushed out per day.

Yazd Water Salinity Increasing – Iran

The salinity of water resources in the arid province of Yazd is increasing due to manmade factors, the managing director of Yazd Regional Water Company said.

Generally, the planet’s rising temperature leads to excessive evaporation in semi-enclosed body of water, which leads to hypersalinity. However, human activities aggravate the problem, ISNA reported.

According to Mohammad Mehdi Javadianzadeh, urban development, excessive pumping of groundwater, rerouting rivers and streams, digging illegal wells, outdated farming methods and installation of desalination plants are among the main causes of water crisis and increased salinity of the precious resource in Yazd.

Desalination processes produce […]

MXene Ti3C2: An Effective 2D Light-to-Heat Conversion Material

MXene, a new series of 2D material, has been steadily advancing its applications to a variety of fields, such as catalysis, supercapacitor, molecular separation, electromagnetic wave interference shielding. This work reports a carefully designed aqueous droplet light heating system along with a thorough mathematical procedure, which combined leads to a precise determination of internal light-to-heat conversion efficiency of a variety of nanomaterials. The internal light-to-heat conversion efficiency of MXene, more specifically Ti3C2, was measured to be 100%, indicating a perfect energy conversion. Furthermore, a self-floating MXene thin membrane was prepared by simple vacuum filtration and the membrane, in the […]
